Walking into Enrique Castanon's apartment is like stepping into a different time-and-space dimension, and having all your senses entombed and absorbed into a floating softness and darkness.

"I wanted the apartment to look like a cave, to feel as if I am living in an egg", says the Argentinian graphics illustrator and artist. The former professional drummer-musician lived in Singapore for two years before he found this 900 square-foot apartment in the unlikely district of Geylang to set up home.

Paintings make the room come alive

The interior of Castanon's apartment is almost entirely enveloped in colored canvas: ceilings beckon the eyes with festoonery, the walls are softened with membranous canvas sheets that drop casually to the floor, and rice straw mats cover the floor. The living room vibrates with a surreal vermillion red and a deep fuchsia, the tints of which are reflected in Castanon's own paintings hung on the walls. According to the painter, the violet and red of the living room are there to heighten happiness and relaxation.

Your senses take in the full richness of the distinct colors of each room, given textural balance by the little items of metallic luster, the burnished gilt, copper and aluminum found in the wrought-iron rails or the metal-plated corners. If art is the sincere expression of the artist, so has the fullness of the design scheme of Enrique Castanon's work in this apartment. The paintings and the apartment's design become interchangeable, one is inseparable of the other. "I try to live in a three-dimensional experience of my paintings", explains Castanon, who single-handedly carried out the work of his own visions.
